Direct-to-Film (DTF) Printing
What it is
DTF takes your artwork, prints it in full color (plus a white underbase) onto a clear PET film with specialized water-based inks, coats the wet ink in a hot-melt adhesive powder, cures it, and then heat-presses the design onto the garment. Think of it as making a “sticker” of your design that permanently fuses with the fibers when we hit it with heat and pressure.
Benefits
-
Photo-Quality Color, No Limits – Gradients, neon sunsets, tiny distress textures, even photorealistic cat memes; if you can design it, DTF can slap it on a shirt.
-
Fabric-Agnostic – Cotton, tri-blend, polyester, nylon, canvas, leatherette… DTF doesn’t discriminate.
-
Killer Durability – Properly cured transfers survive 40–60+ wash cycles without flaking or fading.
-
No Screens, No Weeding, No Tears – We gang-sheet small orders, personalize names, and crank out one-offs without the vinyl weeding party or the setup fees of screen printing.
-
Fast Turnaround – Print today, press tomorrow, ship the day after. Small runs don’t have to wait for a screen room to catch up.
Limitations
-
Hand Feel – The print has a thin, slightly rubbery “patch” feel (less bulky than old-school vinyl, but not as naked-soft as DTG or water-based screen prints).
-
Breathability – Big solid areas trap a bit more body heat. Probably not the move for marathon jerseys in July.
-
Eco Footprint – PET films and adhesive powder create expendables we recycle where possible, but it’s not as green as water-based screen inks.
-
Edge Halos if You’re Sloppy – Misaligned white underbase or extra powder can leave a faint outline—our press techs babysit every sheet so yours don’t.
Ideal For
-
Small-to-medium batches that need full-color detail, personalization, or frequent design changes.
-
Bold dark-shirt prints where HTV would be too chunky and DTG can’t match vibrancy.
-
On-demand drops, limited-edition drops, test runs, or anything that screams “I needed this yesterday.”
Side note from your friendly K&M squad: We still offer our legacy methods (screen print for bulk, sublimation for poly white, etc.), but DTF is now our go-to for wild color dreams on tight timelines. Got a design burning a hole in your brain? Shoot it over—we’ll DTF the heck out of it.
