What Is DTF Printing?

Direct-to-Film printing, commonly called DTF printing, is a method of decorating apparel by printing artwork onto a transfer film, applying an adhesive, and using heat and pressure to transfer the design onto the garment.

Because the artwork is produced digitally, DTF can reproduce full-color graphics, fine detail, text, logos, illustrations, and photo-based artwork without creating a separate printing screen for every color.

DTF can be used on many common apparel fabrics and on both light and dark garments, making it a flexible option for custom T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and other apparel.

Why We Use DTF for Custom Apparel

We chose to specialize in DTF because our customers do not all order the same way.

One customer may need a single custom shirt. A church or family may need a small group order. A business, ministry, organization, or event may need a larger run.

DTF lets us handle those different projects while still working with detailed, full-color artwork without the traditional screen setup required for screen printing.

At K&M Kustom Kreations, DTF is our custom apparel printing method. We do not currently offer traditional screen printing, DTG printing, vinyl printing, or custom apparel embroidery.

If you are not sure whether DTF is right for your project, send us what you have. We will review your artwork, quantity, garment needs, and project details before you move forward.

How Does DTF Printing Work?

1. The Artwork Is Prepared

The process starts with production-ready digital artwork. Depending on the project, that may begin with finished artwork, a business logo, a photograph, text, a sketch, or another reference image.

2. The Design Is Produced on Transfer Film

In the DTF process, the artwork is printed onto specialized transfer film. The process uses a color layer along with white ink so the finished design can remain visible on both light and dark garments.

3. Adhesive and Heat Prepare the Transfer

A specialized adhesive allows the printed design to bond to the garment. The prepared transfer is positioned on the apparel and applied using controlled heat and pressure.

4. The Transfer Is Finished

After pressing, the transfer film is removed according to the transfer requirements and the finished garment is checked before the order is completed.

What Is DTF Printing Good For?

DTF is especially useful when the artwork or order does not fit the traditional limitations of simple one-color printing.

Full-Color Artwork

DTF can reproduce multiple colors within the same design without requiring a separate screen for every color.

Light and Dark Garments

The white layer used in DTF production allows full-color artwork to remain visible on dark apparel as well as lighter garment colors.

Detailed Graphics

Fine lettering, illustrated artwork, logos, distressed graphics, and detailed designs can work well with DTF when the original artwork is prepared correctly.

Single Shirts and Small Runs

Because traditional printing screens do not have to be created for every design and color, DTF is a practical option for one-off shirts and smaller custom orders.

Photo-Based Designs

DTF can reproduce photographic and highly detailed artwork that would be difficult to reproduce with simpler decoration methods.

Group and Business Orders

DTF is also the printing method K&M uses for larger custom apparel orders for businesses, churches, organizations, families, groups, and events.

DTF Printing vs. Screen Printing

DTF and traditional screen printing can both be used to decorate apparel, but they use very different production methods.

K&M Kustom Kreations specializes in DTF printing. We do not offer traditional screen printing.

If you specifically need screen printing, we may not be the right printer for that project. If you simply need quality custom apparel and are not concerned about the production method, send us your project and we can determine whether DTF is a good fit.

Can I Order Just One DTF Shirt?

Yes.

K&M Kustom Kreations accepts custom apparel projects ranging from one shirt to larger group and business orders.

You do not have to order dozens of shirts just to have a custom design printed.

We regularly work with projects such as:

• One custom shirt
• Family or gift shirts
• Small group orders
• Church and ministry apparel
• Business and work shirts
• Event shirts
• Organization apparel
• Larger bulk orders

Pricing depends on the garment, quantity, artwork, print size, print location, and other project requirements.

What Can I Send for a DTF Printing Project?

You do not have to know how to prepare professional print files before contacting us.

You can start with finished artwork, a logo, photograph, sketch, phrase, text, reference image, or rough idea.

We will review what you provide and let you know what is needed before production.

Not Every Image Is Ready to Print

DTF is capable of reproducing fine detail, but the quality of the finished print still depends on the artwork and the size at which it will be printed.

Very low-resolution images, extremely thin lines, tiny lettering, unintended transparency, rough AI-generated details, or artwork pulled from a small online image may need to be corrected before it can produce a clean apparel print.

We review artwork before production rather than simply printing a file because it happens to look good on a phone or computer screen.

What Does a DTF Print Feel Like?

DTF creates a printed transfer layer on top of the garment rather than dyeing the fabric itself.

The finished feel depends heavily on the artwork.

Smaller designs and artwork that allows portions of the garment to show through can feel lighter. Large designs made from solid blocks of printed color can naturally feel heavier because more ink and adhesive are covering the garment.

That is one reason good apparel artwork is designed for the final print size, not just for how it looks on a screen.
